Fraser River Salmon fishing OPEN and HOT!

This is Brian Mack from Silversides Fishing Adventures in Vancouver BC

Like an army invading another country so the Pink Salmon are invading the Fraser river as I write. I expected a rather large return this year and nothing short of huge is taking place! It's early in the Pink run and it's already pegged at 25 million and growing day by day. It's possible that we could see up to 45 million fish returning to the Fraser river watershed. Most will spawn on the gravel bars of the Fraser downstream of Hope where there is about 50 miles of ideal spawning habitat! Pinks are an amazing salmonid species, they return only in odd numbered years on the south coast of BC and in huge numbers. Their life cycle is 2 years from egg laying to return and so they do not get big like some other species but in  that brief life span they end up averaging about 5 lbs and many reach 10 lbs. The world record Pink is a mere 15 lbs. Your typical 5-7 lb Pink can put up a battle that beats it's cousin the Coho of same size or bigger so Pinks make great sport fishing fun for serious anglers and family outings.

Fly fishing for Pink salmon is a favorite pursuit of many because Pinks are aggressive towards any properly stripped fly, provided it has pink and silver in the fly pattern. Floating lines with short sinktips are what we use most here. Fish are usually caught in shallower water, about 2-6 feet deep out of the main current. I have hooked over 100 Pinks in a day's outing many times in the past and many of our clients will be fighting fish pretty much non stop all day. It's no wonder that bookings go crazy at this time of year. Prime dates for Pinks will go 1 year in advance. But if you are a late comer we'll try to make a time for you.

On a side note: Fraser river Sturgeon are lined up on the bottom of the river to feed on spawning pinks and the fishing is intense. This is the time of year when really big fish, and lots of them are caught.  Our Sturgeon often go over 7 feet or 200 lbs and encounters with mammoth fish over 500 lbs are not uncommon.
