Football and Fishing: Catch a Pass and Bass!
September is now in full swing, and while some anglers may be slightly blue about the inevitable changing of the seasons, the end of summer signals one very important event. No, we?re not talking about the kids heading back to school (although that?s a wonderful moment, too!) ? we?re talking about the start of football season. When the National Football League starts its new season every September, millions of football fans tune in every Sunday to watch their favorite teams take to the gridiron and battle for supremacy. Football has remained the most popular sport in the U.S. over the years, and the future of the NFL looks brighter than ever after it narrowly avoided a lockout prior to last season. It goes without saying that many anglers are football fans, and the fact that the NFL season starts this week is sure to take some of you away from the water on Sundays. Additionally, there are many players in the NFL who are avid anglers, and many of these players (past and present) will often take part in charity tournaments. No matter how you slice it, football and fishing will forever be entwined in certain ways.
Roger Craig's passion for football is matched only by his passion for fishing.WFN
A former NFL running back who won three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, Roger Craig is unquestionably one of the best players from his generation, if not of all time. But as any longtime viewer of WFN (or visitor to our website) will tell you, Craig is also an avid angler. A couple of years ago, a lucky WFN viewer won the chance to go on a fishing trip with Craig and spend the day discussing everything from football to angling. As you can see from these videos, Craig is as passionate about fishing as he is about football.
The Buffalo Bills have had a rough go over the past few years, but one of their most consistent players has been defensive end Chris Kelsay. When he?s not on the field, Kelsay, who was born in Nebraska, loves spending his time outdoors, whether it?s camping, hunting, or yes, fishing. Earlier this year, he built a fishing lake on his property and stocked it full of bass
. Now that?s true dedication!
The Miami Dolphins Go Fishing With Kids
Football players, and athletes in general, will often give back to their community by taking some time out of their schedule to hang out and partake in activities with local children. It?s a very rewarding experience for the athletes and unquestionably a real thrill for the kids. For example, this past May, members of the Miami Dolphins held a Junior Angler Fishing Clinic
and spent the day on the water with a group of lucky youngsters. It?s moments like this that kids will remember for a lifetime.
The Detroit Lions/Kevin VanDam Fishing Tournament
What do you get when you pair one of the youngest and most exciting teams in the NFL with arguably the best bass tournament angler in the world? You get one heck of a charity fishing tournament! This past June, the Detroit Lions teamed up with Kevin VanDam
to host their inaugural charity tourney on Michigan?s Kent Lake. VanDam, who is a lifelong Lions fan (which, given their record up until the last couple of years, must not have been easy!), spent the day on the water with Lions players, including back-up QB Shaun Hill and receiver Nate Burleson.
The Football Jig
The football jigWFN
Of course, when you?re talking about football and fishing, you have to mention one of the most popular jigs in all of bass fishing: the football jig. Used primarily for bass fishing (particularly smallmouth bass), the football jig allows you to walk and drag the bait across the bottom. It is usually used in conjunction with a soft plastic crawfish.
