Bull Trout Wrestling

In Southwestern British Columbia, steelhead is recognized as the most popular freshwater fish species for recreational fishermen in winter months. While it may be the favorite, there are several other less-known species that anglers can target.
Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus
) is one of these other species. What were once recognized as pests that pose as a predatory threat to juvenile salmon, bull trout now provide excellent catch and release fishing opportunities for anglers in streams.
They are found across Western Canada but the life history of each region?s population differs from one another. The coastal variety can either reside in streams or lake permanently, migrate between streams and lakes, or be anadromous.
Unlike salmon, anadromy in coastal bull trout are not as regular. They simply travel to where food are found. In spring and summer, coastal bull trout travel into the estuaries and salt to feed on juvenile salmon that migrate into the ocean. In fall and winter, they take over streams to feed on salmon eggs and other freshwater inhabitants such as sculpin and other small fish.
Last week I took advantage of a brief sunny break in this rainy season by searching for these bull trout. The result was not spectacular in terms of quantity but the sole catch was a memorable encounter that does not happen often.
