Fishing Lure Hacks: Jigs

Fishing Lure Hacks: Jigs

Jigs are a mainstay of bass fishing. They are versatile lures that can be used in a wide variety of situations, but the excel around cover. Here are some hacks that will help you get the most out of your jigs.

Trimming a jig skirt

Trim the Skirt

Always have a pair of scissors with you when fishing jigs. Use them to trim the skirt. This will change the profile of the jig in the water.

Change the Skirt

Changing the skirt is a quick and easy way to modify your jigs. Keep a variety of colors in your tackle box so you can change them on the water.

Color the Skirt

Try using a permanent marker to change the color of the skirt on your jigs. You can also use scented markers or dyes that are available from various fishing tackle manufacturers.

Trimming a jig weed guard

Trim the Weed Guard

The weed guard on a jig is great at preventing snags, but it can also get in the way of your hooksets. Trim it down on a forward sloping angle until it is just long enough to still protect the hook when folded back. Anything more is just getting in the way of your hooksets.

Painting eyes on a jig with nail polish

Paint Eyes

If your jig doesn't already have them, you can paint eyes on the head of the jig. Use a dab of nail polish on each side of the jig head.

Adding a rattle to a jig

Add a Rattle

Rattles on jigs are like a dinner bell for fish. Some rattles come ready to attach to the hook shaft, while others require a rubber band to hold them. The extra noise is great for attracting fish.
