First Colorado Ice Fishing Tournament Of The Year

On Jan. 8, 2011, Eleven Mile State Park will host the Grand Slam Ice Fishing Contest. The Grand Slam is the first leg of the Colorado Classic Ice Fishing Tournament 2011, produced by the 11 Mile Marina and presented by the Denver Sports Column. Contestants can fish for northern pike, trout or Kokanee salmon with cash prizes awarded in each category. This is a team event and each team has two anglers.Participants may fish anywhere on the reservoir. In addition to the thousands of dollars up for grabs, lucky anglers can win door prizes including pairs of Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets tickets, tackle, outdoor gear and dinners for two at Bronco Billy's Steakhouse in Cripple Creek. The contest begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. The early entry fee is $75 per team, but will increase to $95 on the day of the contest. Visit to download rules, regulations and entry forms or call the Marina at 1 (877) 725-3172 for more information.

A $7 daily pass or an annual park pass, $70, is required for all vehicles entering the park. A valid Colorado fishing license is also required for all participants.

Park officials remind ice fishermen that ice thicknesses may vary considerably within relatively short walking distances. Anyone venturing out onto the ice should always go with a partner, drill test holes to determine ice thickness, wear a life jacket and carry ice picks, and carry 50 feet of rope and a cell phone. Park rangers also recommend that anglers stay away from pressure ridges, open water and ice that is porous, soft or has granulated crystals.
