Angling opportunities are locked in for a spectacular year of fishing across Iowa in 2014. No matter is you're Iowa bass fishing or angling for another freshwater species, there's a good chance it's available in both quantity and size somewhere in Iowa this year. If you're looking for where to fish this month, here is your best bet for February trout fishing in Iowa.
The DNR continues to expand its program of stocking trout during the winter in small lakes or ponds near urban areas during the winter. More than 17 small bodies of water, including Ada Hayden Lake near Ames, the pond at Discovery Park in Muscatine, and Banner Lake south of Des Moines, are stocked with keeper-size trout for this year's put-and-take trout season.
Yellow perch are at a cyclical low at the Iowa Great Lakes. Catch rates will be lower than during the cyclical high 3 years ago, but the remnants of that year-class are whoppers.
Channel catfish in farm ponds cluster in the deepest water during midwinter. Drill a hole directly over a pod of channel cats and you may have to figure out how to get a 9-inch-wide catfish head through an 8-inch hole in the ice.
