The smallest of the Great Lakes yielded the Pennsylvania’s largest lake trout for one angler.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Todd Young reeled in a 29-pound, 4-ounce lake trout while fishing on Lake Erie on May 6.

Young’s catch beats the previous record, a 27-pound, 13-ouncer caught by Tom Illar Jr. in 1996.

Young, a recent graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania, caught the fish aboard the charter boat Eyecon II about three miles off the Harborcreek Township.

The Post-Gazette reports that Young’s trout was raised by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Allegheny National Fish Hatchery in Warren, Pa., then was put in Lake Erie as part of the state’s Great Lakes trout restoration project.

According to the International Game Fish Association, the world record lake trout was a 72-pounder caught by Lloyd Bull on Aug. 19, 1995, at Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
