A Pocasset, Okla., man reeled in the new Oklahoma record smallmouth bass Saturday, beating the old record by a mere four ounces.

According to the Tulsa World, Ryan Wasser landed an 8-pound, 7-ounce smallie on Lake Lawtonka, beating the previous state record, an 8-pound, 3-ouncer caught by Steve McLarty in March 2006.

Wasser landed the lunker — which measured 23 1/8 inches long with an 18-inch girth — Saturday while fishing with his mother, Rise Wasser, and his 6-year-old son, Rylan.

He told reporters that he knew he had a potential state record as soon as it hit the line, 10-pound-test fluorocarbon baited with a finesse worm on a shaky football head jig. Soon enough, he was measuring the big smallie “between 8.44 and 8.46 pounds” with a digital scale on the boat.

While he’d originally planned to take the record smallie to Bass Pro Shops for display, his catch didn’t make it that long, dying after two days. Now, he said, the fish is frozen while he carefully scouts local taxidermists.
