Choosing an archery accessory is like choosing the perfect spouse. They come in all shapes and sizes, but in the end, the choice comes down to emotion and personal preference. Somewhere in this list, every bowhunter should find the perfect union.

BROADHEADS

BARRIE ARCHERY
For those who have loved Barrie’s mechanical Snyper but wished for a three-bladed version, it is finally here. The Snyper XP3 utilizes the same blade opening technology as the original Snyper, opening from the rear, forward as the broadhead enters the target. The head has a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter and weighs 100 grains.

MUZZY
Muzzy is not a company given to changing its time-proven designs on a whim. Their basic stable of heads has changed little in the past 10 years. The most popular head Muzzy makes is the 100-grain 3-Blade model. It has a cutting diameter of 1 3/16 inches and features Muzzy’s rock solid blade retention system and super tough Trocar steel tip. When you take the head off your arrow, Muzzy’s trademark super-sharp blades don’t fall out.

GOLDEN KEY FUTURA
Deadhead Banshee broadheads fall into one of the fastest growing broadhead markets: solid, cut to the point broadheads for greater penetration from low poundage or traditional bows. The Banshee has two basic blades. However, there is also a six-blade style with four additional secondary blades. The two-blade version weighs 100 grains while the six-blade version weighs 125 grains.

NEW ARCHERY PRODUCTS
Last year’s popular Crossfire mini-broadhead is now available in a 125-grain size to complement the original 100-grain model. These heads have short, stout blades molded into a replaceable cartridge. Both heads have a cutting diameter of 1 1/8 inches and have a small cross-section for decreased wind planing. They also have small tabs at the back of their blades that cause the cartridge to spin through the air more cleanly.

J2X BROADHEADS
The Black Mamba is a mechanical head that features a weighted slug inside the ferrule that moves forward on impact to unlock the blades so they can open easily after the tip enters. This three-bladed head also has a new Spiral Cut Tip and the exposed ends of the blades are curved to help spin-stabilize the head in flight. The 100-grain head has a 1 1/6-inch cutting diameter.

INNERLOC
The new Stainless Extreme is an all-steel broadhead that has a stainless ferrule and three stainless fixed-position blades. This, combined with Innerloc’s rugged blade-locking design, produces exceptional strength to handle impact from any angle, even into solid bone. The 100-grain version has a 1 1/16-inch cutting diameter while the 125-grain version has a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter.

TIGHT POINT
The Shuttle T-Lock broadhead from Tight Point features a head that is designed to mimic the shape of the space shuttle for improved aerodynamics. The head has minimal blade surface, but still produces a full 1 1/8- or 1 3/16-inch cutting diameter (100 grain and 125 grain respectively). The blades have T-shaped bases that slide into slots and lock securely into the ferrule.

GRIM REAPER
Grim Reaper provides a variety of broadhead options for bowhunters, including the Razortip and Hades versions. There are two new offerings in the Razortip line, including a 75-grain 1 1/8-inch Mini and the 100/125-grain 1 3/4-inch Extra, both of which can include an optional Razorcut blade.

CAROLINA ARCHERY
You probably know Carolina Archery Products best as the makers of the phenomenally popular Whisker Biscuit rest. For 2005, they are also making sights. Their Foxfire series includes two very compact, very light-weight sights that you can adjust without any tools. One is a single pin sight while the other has three pins. A clever adjustment system (even for the individual pins) allows them to lock down solidly with only finger tension.

TROPHY RIDGE
Trophy Ri
dge makes vertical pin sights. In the past, the pins have always come up from the bottom of the round guard, but this year they are offering the new Rhino with four pins that come down from the top and one that comes up from the bottom. The top four pins are individually adjustable. This arrangement provides the maximum field of view while aiming with the long-range pins. The Rhino is very rugged with all-aluminum machined construction.

COBRA ARCHERY
Cobra was one of the first companies to manufacture spooled fiber sights that produce super bright aiming points for low light visibility. This year, they have become the first to add an external light source to their spooled sights to increase their flexibility. The UV light source lights all three pins. The new sight is ideal for hunters who sometimes find themselves in ground blinds where ambient light is nearly nonexistent.

COPPER JOHN
Round sight bodies have advantages over other shapes because they permit you to center their entire perimeter inside a large peep sight for better low light visibility without losing accuracy. The Copper John Dead Nuts Pro Series sights have round housings and five bright fiber optic pins that are bent to permit zero pin gap. Pro Series sights are extremely adjustable for level, windage and elevation.

WASP
The Boss and Boss Bullet are fixed-blade heads with minimal blade surface to reduce wind planing at high arrow speeds. The Boss Bullet has unvented blades, a 1-inch cutting diameter and weighs 75 or 100 grains while the standard Boss has vented blades and a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter. It weighs 100 grains. Both styles feature Wasp’s aggressive stainless steel Smart Tip that has cutting edges that line up with the broadhead’s blades.

ROCKET AEROHEADS
The new Recon has blades that open from the back forward, driven open when the sharpened tip moves backward at impact. This eliminates any lost energy caused by long blades opening from the front backward. The two-blade Recon comes in two weights: 100 and 125 grains, both with a 1 1/2-inch cutting width. The blades are fully enclosed so this head flies like a field point.

SIGHTS

MONTANA BLACK GOLD
The most visible aiming points are at the end of long spooled filaments of fiber. Montana Black Gold put this concept to work in their Skylight sight. The fibers of the new sight are spooled on top of the sight body where they are unlikely to break even with hard hunting and where they can gather light easily. The four-pin sight is machined from aluminum and the pins fully contain and protect the .030-inch-diameter fibers. The sight has a built-in level.

VITAL BOW GEAR
Pendulum sights permit bowhunters to aim dead-on from a tree stand for all distances from 5 to roughly 30 yards without the need to estimate distance. The new Camel Back Pendulum from Vital Bow Gear features 3 feet of wrapped fiber that produce a very bright single green aiming point. An inner sight frame pivots within an outer, protective frame to compensate for shot distance. You can also lock the sight to keep it from swiveling.

HI VIZ
Bowhunters are always looking for ways to eliminate their peep sight for better visibility without giving up consistency and accuracy. Hi Viz offers a realistic alternative. Their XCel HD sight is a fiber optic pin sight with a rear X-shaped sight aperture. You line the rear sight up with the front pin, in much the same way you would with a gun, thereby eliminating the need for a peep sight.

TOXONICS
Toxonics has taken a slightly different approach to spooled fiber with its K9 series of sights. The spool is located in the dovetail adjustment bracket where aluminum surrounds it on two sides for protection. Toxonics has also encased the spool in clear plastic. The K9 Five has five .029-inch-diameter fiber pins and a reversible extension bar that you can flip to fit the sight window of every bow.

FUSE
Introduced as part of the new Fuse product line, the Buckhorn sight has a machined outline of a nice 10-point buck on the mounting plate and five elastic ShockRods around the perimeter of the round sight head. The ShockRods soak up vibration. The sight has five fiber optic pins (you can choose between spooled fiber and standard pins) and a bubble level. It’s a cool, very functional sight.

TRUGLO
If anyone understands fiber optic filaments for archery sights it is Truglo. Truglo was the first company to bring this technology to the archery market in the mid-’90s. Their product line continues to evolve and improve each year. Their latest sight is the Tru-Site Xtreme. It features a very streamlined design with a round pin guard and five spooled fiber optic pins. The fiber wraps around the aluminum pin guard to gather the maximum amount of light. The glow-in-the-dark ring around the sight body makes alignment easier in low light and also illuminates the sight’s distinctive red level.
